بشنو این نی چون شکایت میکند از جداییها حکایت میکند
Beshno in ney chon shikayat mikonad Az judaiha hekayat mikonad
"Listen to the reed, how it tells a tale, complaining of separations: ever since I was parted from the reed bed, my lament has caused man and woman to moan."
The opening of Rumi's Masnavi and one of the most famous passages in Persian literature. A reed flute is cut from its bed and can only make music because of that wound — Rumi's image for the soul, cut off from God, whose whole song is the ache of that separation. This is ishq-e-haqiqi at its most direct: love as the pain of distance from the source.
