اول حمد خدا دا ورد کریئے، عشق کیتا سو جگ دا مول میاں
Avval hamd Khuda da vird kariye, ishq keeta su jag da mool mian
"First, let us praise God — for it was love (ishq) that became the root of this entire world."
Waris Shah opens his 18th-century telling of Heer-Ranjha — the Punjabi Romeo and Juliet — by praising God, and in the same breath naming ishq as the origin of everything that exists. Before the tragedy of two lovers even begins, the poem insists love isn't a subplot of the world; it's the reason there's a world at all.
